SIX EASY ACCESS POINTS TO THE TRAIL

You can join the KAPOAH-Québec (Canada) Camino to Santiago anywhere along its route. However, some access points are more convenient than others.

Access Points for Your Hiking Pilgrimage

1. Lac Bouchette Hermitage

  • VIA RAIL scenic regional train departing from Montreal on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays:
  • VIA Rail – 1-888-842-2323 (Canada and the U.S.).
  • Other Countries via the Web: Via Rail Sales Agents Abroad.
    • Report your stop (Lac Bouchette) to the train conductor.
    • Once you arrive, you can either take a taxi to the Hermitage or ask for directions and walk 4 to 5 km to the Hermitage of Saint-Antoine.
    • You can also stay at the Motel Christine, which is closer.

2. Métabetchouan / Jonquière

3. Saguenay (Chicoutimi – La Baie)

  • Bagotville Airport is served by AIR CANADA (WEB) from Montreal; it is 13 km from downtown Saguenay (Chicoutimi borough) and 14 km from the La Baie borough.
  • Daily bus service from Montreal, Longueuil, and Quebec City: INTERCAR

4. Tadoussac, Anse-Saint-Jean, and Rivière-Éternité

  • Intercar from Montreal (Bus Terminal – Berri Metro Station – UQAM) and from Quebec City (Sainte-Foy Terminal or Gare Du Palais: accessible via city bus 800, which connects the two) toward the North Shore of the St. Lawrence River. It’s sometimes possible to avoid changing buses; be sure to check.
  • Tadoussac–Anse-Saint-Jean–Rivière-Éternité Cruise www.navettesdufjord.com; July–August only

OPTION 1: Transfer to a boat bound for Rivière-Éternité. Once there, you can hike up Cap Éternité to the statue of the Virgin of Saguenay (2 hours one way / 2 hours return)

  • A 7-km hike from the dock to the village of Rivière-Éternité; lodging at the Auberge du dimanche (for individuals and couples) or at the church (for groups). (See Rivière-Éternité, below)
  • Alternatively, there’s a campground 1 km from the dock. Reservations are required through SÉPAQ for one night of camping or at a forest shelter if you take the trail to Anse-Saint-Jean (2 days).

OPTION 2: Get off the boat, explore the village of Anse-Saint-Jean, and head to the Le Camp de base Youth Hostel (8 km) to stay the night and take advantage of transportation to Petit-Saguenay or Rivière-Éternité the next day +1 (418) 540-4150.

Unless you plan to hike the Sépaq trails, in which case it’s best to stay at Camping de l’Anse (418) 272-2554 www.campingdelanse.ca. or at the Gîte du Capitaine at (418) 272-4444.

5. Baie-Saint-Paul / La Malbaie / Saint-Siméon

Intercar

  • From Montreal (Bus Terminal – Berri Metro Station – UQAM) and from Quebec City (Sainte-Foy Terminal or Gare du Palais: accessible via city bus 800, which connects these two terminals) to Saint-Siméon. It is sometimes possible to make the trip without changing buses; be sure to check.

Charlevoix Train

From the Chute Montmorency station to the La Malbaie station:

  • Panoramic train: Reserve your date, time, and seat. This train is very popular at certain times during the summer. Information: (418) 240-4124
  • Important: You may need to change trains at the Baie-Saint-Paul station for the final leg of your trip to the La Malbaie station. Please check with the train crew or station staff at Baie-Saint-Paul for more information.

From Quebec City to the Chute Montmorency Train Station

  • Take bus 800 to the Beauport Terminal, then head to stopNo. 3546 for bus 53, which will take you to stopNo. 3743 . Get off the bus. Walk to Sainte-Anne Boulevard, then turn left after crossing the railroad tracks, walk along the boulevard on the left side facing traffic, and turn onto the first street on the left until you reach the Charlevoix Train Station.

Trans-St. Lawrence

  • That is the name of the boat that operates the crossing between Rivière-du-Loup and Saint-Siméon de Charlevoix (27.5 km in 1.5 hours). Rivière-du-Loup is a hub for pilgrims and hikers coming from Kamouraska, the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, the Gaspé Peninsula, and New Brunswick. Check the current summer schedule.

6. Côte-de-Beaupré / Saint-Joachim de Montmorency

  • PLU MOBILE: The PLU MOBILE bus service, which runs along the Côte de Beaupré from Quebec City to Saint-Joachim, has a departure point in Kapoah.
    • 418-827-8484 / www.plumobile.ca (check the schedule; make a reservation by 3 p.m. the day before)
    • FREE transportation service.
    • Departs at 4:20 p.m. (check), Monday through Friday, from the Grand Théâtre de Québec, 269 René-Lévesque Boulevard, Québec, QC, G1R 2B3.
  • Please note: In Beaupré, take the shuttle to Saint-Joachim; otherwise, the bus will continue on to Saint-Féréol.
  • Arrival in Saint-Joachim at 5:50 p.m. (final stop: Saint-Joachim Church and City Hall).
  • Restrooms at City Hall (basement). Check to see if they are open after business hours.
  • Take Rue de l’Église toward Avenue Royale, where the PLU MOBILE vehicle will arrive. (0.8 km)
  • Turn left toward Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and follow Avenue Royale to your lodging and destination. VIEW THE ITINERARY. Arrival in Sainte-Anne around 8:00 p.m. Notify Father Hôtelier (418-808-6870). (8 km)
