Itinerary

From the Chicoutimi neighborhood to the La Baie neighborhood

  • Head down Salaberry Street, across from Chicoutimi Cathedral, toward Saguenay Boulevard. Turn right onto Saguenay Boulevard. (0.1 km)
  • Walk to the Rivière du Moulin Bridge. (2 km)
  • Turn left onto Boulevard Renaud. (0.3 km)
  • Turn right onto Rue de Nantes. (1 km)
  • At the intersection with Rang Saint-Martin, continue straight ahead onto what becomes Rang Saint-Joseph. (0.8 km)
  • At the intersection of Route de l’Anse à Benjamin and Chemin Saint-Joseph (14 km), continue straight ahead onto what becomes Victoria Street. (1 km)
  • Continue along Victoria Street until you reach the bike path. (2.5 km)
  • The first lodging option: La Grange aux Hiboux. (2.5 km)
  • Continue along the bike path to Auberge Le Saint-Alexis (the former rectory). (4 km)

Ha! Ha! Pyramid

Clearly visible from the road, the Ha! Ha! Pyramid was built by local residents on the riverbed of the Ha! Ha! River, which overflowed extensively during the 1996 flood, sweeping away numerous buildings and homes.

A Brief History of the Stopover Town

The Bay

La Baie was founded in 1838 by employees of the Société des Vingt-et-un, a Charlevoix-based logging company purchased by William Price in 1842. Price’s sawmills were soon supplemented by port facilities, turning the natural harbor of La Baie into a port on the Atlantic coast. A paper mill was built there in 1917 (Consolidated Bathurst), followed by an aluminum smelter in 1979 (Alcan).

La Baie comprises four former municipalities: Bagotville, Port-Alfred, and the parishes of Grande-Baie and Bagotville. It became a borough of the City of Saguenay in 2002.
